It’s a question I’m asked more often than you might expect.
Couples who have done their research — who have gone beyond the first wave of Pinterest inspiration and started looking seriously at venues, availability, and logistics — often arrive at the same crossroads: Lake Como or Lake Maggiore?
Both are in northern Italy. Both are within an hour of Milan. Both have historic villas, elegant venues, and that particular quality of light on water that makes photographs look effortless. And yet they are genuinely different destinations, and the right choice depends on what kind of wedding you are actually trying to create.
Here is how I think about it.
The Atmosphere
Lake Como has an energy that is hard to describe without resorting to clichés — and the clichés exist for a reason. It is dramatic, vertical, intensely scenic. The mountains drop steeply to the water, the villages cling to the shoreline, and the villas feel like they were built to be looked at. There is a glamour to Como that is real and earned, and couples who want their wedding to feel cinematic will find it here.
Lake Maggiore is quieter. The landscape is gentler, the pace more relaxed, and the atmosphere — particularly on the Piedmont shore — has an understated elegance that doesn’t announce itself. It is the kind of place where beauty reveals itself gradually rather than all at once. Couples who value privacy, calm, and a celebration that feels deeply personal rather than spectacular tend to respond to Maggiore in a way they don’t always anticipate.
Neither is better. They are simply different moods.
Availability and Timing
This is where the practical reality of planning a destination wedding becomes important.
Lake Como’s most sought-after venues — the ones that appear in every editorial and every curated list — are booked well in advance, particularly for summer Saturdays. If you are planning a wedding in peak season and have a specific venue in mind, you need to move quickly, and you need to be prepared for the possibility that your first choice is not available.
Lake Maggiore has a wider selection of venues and, in most cases, greater availability. This doesn’t mean it’s a backup option — it means you have more room to find the venue that genuinely fits your vision, rather than the one that happened to have a date open.
If flexibility matters to you, or if you are starting to plan with less than 18 months to go, Maggiore is worth taking seriously from the beginning.
Logistics and Guest Experience
Anyone who has driven around Lake Como in July knows that the roads can be genuinely difficult. The main lakeside road is narrow, frequently congested, and in high season, transfers between venues — or between a hotel and a ceremony location — can take significantly longer than expected. For multi-day weddings with guests moving between locations, this is a real consideration.
Lake Maggiore is easier to navigate. The road network is more practical, venues tend to have better access, and the proximity to Malpensa airport — one of Milan’s main international hubs — makes arrivals and departures straightforward for guests coming from North America, the UK, or Asia.
If your guest list includes older relatives, families with young children, or anyone for whom travel logistics matter, Maggiore’s accessibility is a genuine advantage.
The Venues
Lake Como’s iconic villas are, genuinely, among the most beautiful wedding settings in the world. Villa del Balbianello, Villa Sola Cabiati, Villa Erba — these are places with a weight of history and a visual power that is difficult to replicate. If the venue itself is central to your vision, Como remains exceptional.
Lake Maggiore’s offering is different but equally refined. Villa Palazzo Aminta brings together Belle Époque architecture and lakeside gardens with the comfort and service of a luxury hotel. Villa Rusconi-Clerici offers something more intimate and historically layered. Villa Claudia Dal Pozzo, Villa Muggia, and Villa Frua each have their own character — and all share that quality of quiet grandeur that defines the best venues on the lake.
The difference is not in quality. It is in style: Como tends toward the iconic and dramatic, Maggiore toward the elegant and understated.
Budget
There is no simple rule here, and costs vary significantly depending on the specific venue, the time of year, and the size of the wedding. That said, Lake Maggiore generally offers more flexibility — both in terms of venue pricing and in the range of catering and supplier options available.
For couples working with a defined budget who want to allocate it thoughtfully — prioritising, say, flowers and music over the prestige of a particular postcode — Maggiore often allows for more creative control.
So, Which One?
If you want drama, iconography, and a setting that the world already recognises as extraordinary: Lake Como.
If you want elegance, privacy, easier logistics, and a celebration that feels curated rather than expected: Lake Maggiore.
